Memorial of the Queenship of Mother Mary

August 22 - Memorial of the Queenship of Mother Mary

A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. ~Revelation 12:1

The foundation for Mother Mary's Queenship rests on four theological pillars:
  1.     Divine Motherhood (Theotokos): Because Jesus is the true Eternal King of the Universe, Mary, as His earthly mother, shares in His royal status.
  2.     The Gebirah Model: In ancient Davidic kingdoms, the king often had many wives, so royal influence was held not by the spouse, but by the King’s mother—known as the Gebirah or Queen Mother (e.g., Bathsheba to King Solomon). She served as a trusted advocate and advocate for the people before the throne.
  3.     Co-Operation in Redemption: Mary participated intimately in the salvation story through her Fiat ("let it be done"), standing at the cross, and suffering alongside Christ. Because she shared in His struggle, she shares in His glory. Only in Heaven will be understand the central role Mother Mary played in the redemption of mankind by her Son.
  4.     Intercessory Role: While still on the cross, Jesus gave Mary the stewardship of all humanity as noted by the Gospel of John 19:26:  "When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, 'Woman, behold, your son." Unlike temporal monarchs who rule with power, Mary's queenship is understood in Catholic theology as a ministry of mercy, intercession, and spiritual care for all believers. As Queen, Mother Mary not only intercedes on our behalf, she also acts as her Son’s mediator. From her heavenly throne, the Queen Mother of Heaven and Earth is entrusted with the grace of God.

We not only have a mother in Heaven, we also have a Queen Mother. As Mary is the Queen Mother of God, we must turn to her with childlike faith and simplicity. As a young child runs to a loving mother in time of need, never questioning her love, protection, and care, so we must run to her. She is our protectress, our refuge, our hope, and our sweet delight. Her affection is perfect and her motherly love unmatched.

Assumption and Coronation in Heaven of Mother Mary

In 1950, Pope Pius XII issued an apostolic proclamation of the Assumption of Mother Mary to Heaven by which he declared as a dogma of our faith “that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” Since Jesus is the King of Kings, and since He sits on His throne at the right hand of the Father in Heaven, and since his mother was assumed into Heaven, body and soul, then the logical conclusion flowing from these truths necessarily leads us to the Queenship of Mother Mary.

On October 11, 1954, four years after the proclamation of the Assumption, Pope Pius XII instituted the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary with his encyclical letter, Ad Caeli Reginam (The Queen of Heaven). This memorial was first assigned the date May 31, which followed the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Octave of the Coronation of Mother Mary

In 1969, Pope Paul VI moved the date to August 22, eight days after the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In large part, this was done to create an octave of anticipation and to show that the Assumption necessarily results in the Mother of God being also the Queen Mother of Heaven and Earth. In the Catholic faith, an Octave is an eight-day period of celebration given to the Church's most solemn feasts. Rather than celebrating a major mystery of faith for a single 24-hour period, the Church treats the entire eight days as if they were one continuous, extended feast day.

Fulfillment of Adam and Eve

Christ as the New Adam
St. Paul explicitly establishes the parallel in Romans 5:12–19 and 1 Corinthians 15:21–22, 45.
  •     Adam was created sinless, but through his disobedience (pride), sin and physical death entered the world.
  •     Christ, as the "last Adam," was conceived without sin, but through His perfect obedience unto death on the Cross (humility), He conquered sin and brought eternal life.

Mary as the New Eve
Catholic exegetes link Mary as the New Eve back to Genesis 3:15 (the Protoevangelium or "First gospel"), where God tells the serpent: "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers." This prophecy is seen as fully realized in Revelation 12 with the vision of the "woman clothed with the sun."
While St. Paul articulates the Christ-Adam dynamic, Early Church Fathers like St. Justin Martyr (c. 160 AD) and St. Irenaeus of Lyons (c. 180 AD) recognized that Eve played a distinct role alongside Adam in the Fall. Therefore, a woman must also co-operate in the restoration.
As St. Irenaeus famously wrote: "The knot of Eve's disobedience was untied by Mary's obedience; what the virgin Eve bound through her disbelief, the Virgin Mary set free through her faith."
